Which components hold the board?
- Backer board screws provide the mechanical fixing to the specified framing.
- Anchors and washers spread the fixing load and suit the approved substrate and installation method.
- The backer board fixing kit brings standard fixing and sealing components together for a coordinated order.
Our installation reference uses screws and washers at 300 mm spacing. Actual quantities depend on sheet size, framing layout, board edges and project requirements, so the complete board layout should be checked before ordering.
Which components reinforce and seal the system?
- Elastic waterproof sealing tape treats board joints, corners and movement-sensitive details as specified.
- Specialized waterproof sealant is used at seams, perimeters and penetrations within the compatible system.
- Self-adhesive mesh fabric provides reinforcement where the installation detail calls for it. Where mesh is embedded in sealant, it should be fully covered rather than left exposed on the finished surface.
For sealant estimation, measure the actual joint, perimeter and penetration lengths, then use the cartridge yield at the specified bead size and add project-appropriate waste. Corners, drains and pipe penetrations should be counted separately rather than estimating only flat board joints. Read our guide to the complete backer board accessory system or download installation documents from Resources.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mesh tape and waterproof sealing tape?
Mesh provides reinforcement where the specified detail calls for it; waterproof sealing tape forms part of the joint-sealing detail. They are not interchangeable labels for the same job. Follow the installation sequence for the joint, corner or penetration being treated.
Why do backer board screws need washers?
Washers spread the fixing load over a larger area and help prevent the screw head from pulling through the coated board surface. The screw, washer, substrate and spacing still need to match the approved installation detail.
How do I estimate sealant and fixing quantities?
Start with the board layout, sheet dimensions, total joint length, perimeter, corners and penetrations. Calculate fixings from the approved spacing and sealant from bead size and cartridge yield, then add suitable waste. A single quantity per square metre cannot reliably cover every room layout.
Send your board list, room dimensions and shower details through our project contact form. We will help turn them into a coordinated list of boards, screws, washers, tapes, mesh and sealant.
