XPS Backer Board Applications: Where Our Boards Work

From shower walls to roof decks: 18 real-world applications for our XPS backer boards and prefabricated wet room systems, batch-tested before every shipment. Two of those batch tests are on camera — sound and rigidity — on our Videos page.

One board, two diagrams, eighteen applications. Tile Backer Pro XPS backer boards are engineered for wet areas first — but the same waterproof, load-bearing panel works across the whole house. The diagrams below show exactly where our boards install, numbered and matched to the products that ship them.

One Bathroom, Eleven Board Applications

A residential bathroom packs more board applications into ten square meters than any other room. The diagram below maps all eleven — from the wall behind the tile to the custom shower base underfoot.

One Board, Seven Whole-House Applications

Beyond the bathroom, the same XPS core panel serves the rest of the building envelope. This cutaway shows the seven standard whole-house applications.

The Seven Applications

  1. Roof Surface — insulation and waterproof backing under roof finishes
  2. Suspended Ceiling — lightweight backing for ceiling boards
  3. Wall — full waterproof backing for interior walls
  4. Partition Wall — fast-drying backing between wet and dry zones
  5. Exterior Wall — weather-resistant layer behind exterior finishes
  6. Floor — load-bearing waterproof underlayment under tile and stone
  7. Basement — moisture-proof lining for below-grade walls and floors

Standard boards cover walls, floors and ceilings; the bathroom elements above handle the wet zone. Custom shapes and sizes are cut to drawing on the same lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A 20 mm or thicker board, fully sealed at joints and corners with waterproof tape and sealant, forms a load-bearing, waterproof base directly under tile. See application 8 in the bathroom diagram above.

Yes. Screw the board down through the plywood into the framing at 200–300 mm centers, then tape and seal all joints. The board must carry the tile load, not the plywood beneath it.

Yes. The closed-cell XPS core does not absorb moisture, which makes the board a common choice for basement walls and floors. Below-grade installations still need correct drainage and a sealed envelope.

Walls typically use 6–10 mm; floors and shower bases need 20 mm or more to carry load. Thickness options run from 4 to 50 mm — see our core range for the full breakdown.
